Proton has added an entry-level variant to the S70 range. The 1.5 i-GT drops the turbocharger of the 1.5TD and starts at RM59,800, making it one of the cheapest C-segment sedans on sale in Malaysia.
Proton Edar launched the S70 1.5 i-GT on 22 September 2026. There are two variants: the Lite at RM59,800 and the Prime at RM62,800. Both are built in Malaysia.
The i-GT uses the same 1,499 cc four-cylinder petrol engine family as the S70 1.5TD, but without the turbocharger. Output is 120 ps and 150 Nm, sent to the front wheels through an 8-speed CVT. The fuel tank holds 50 litres.
Dropping the turbo keeps the price down. At RM59,800, the Lite costs about as much as a well-equipped B-segment sedan, but gives buyers the longer body and roomier cabin of a C-segment car.
Lite or Prime
The Prime, at RM62,800, has a more generous equipment list, including a camera-based driver-assistance system that the Lite does not get. It also rides on larger 17-inch wheels with 205/50R17 tyres, against 16-inch wheels and 205/55R16 tyres on the Lite. The Prime weighs 1,281 kg, 12 kg more than the Lite.
The Lite is still good value at RM59,800 if you can live with the smaller wheels and a shorter features list. Both variants seat five and have six airbags, and the S70 carries a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating from 2023.
Size and chassis
The S70 is 4,602 mm long, 1,809 mm wide and 1,466 mm tall, with a 2,627 mm wheelbase. Suspension is by MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear, with ventilated discs in front and solid discs at the rear. The turning radius is 5.1 metres, which makes it easy to handle in tight carparks despite its length.
With the 1.5 i-GT, Proton now covers both ends of the S70 range: the turbocharged 1.5TD for those who want more performance, and the naturally aspirated i-GT for buyers who want C-segment space at the lowest possible price.
